This wasn’t the first time Breckin had experienced two panic attacks in the span of a day, but it was the first time he hadn’t been able to have a physical reaction to one. He was paralyzed inside his own body, and it was the worst claustrophobia he had ever been subjected to and probably ever would be. At least when he was trapped in a closet he could react. He could scream or kick or hit the walls but he couldn’t even do that; the prison was his skin.

But that wasn’t the worst part. The worst part was having to watch him intimidate Lana. It was an out-of-body experience for him, seeing her shrink away in fear from him. And now Riley was standing over her, placing his hands on her head and she looked no more terrified than if he was about to kill her. But he knew Riley wouldn’t kill her. He needed her, and she knew this – what was she so afraid of? Her dark blue eyes were gleaming with tears and her quivering lips were begging him not to do whatever he was about to do.

The moment his fingers made contact with Lana’s skin, both Breckin and Riley were hit with a wave of her thoughts and memories. Breckin had been inside her mind many times, but this was very different – for one thing, it wasn’t consensual and Breckin could sense her walls going up, trying to stop Riley from breaking through. Riley did break through them of course, as easily as if her mental walls had been made of sand, and he was flipping through her head like the pages of a book searching a specific chapter. And then he found the chapter.

Please, Riley, don’t do this, Lana’s voice pleaded at him, I’ll do anything you want, I’m sorry, just don’t show him, I’m begging you, please –

But Riley didn’t listen, and he zoomed in on the memories and feelings on the subject he had been looking for.

On Breckin himself.

And then he was experiencing every moment the two of them had ever shared together, except it was through Lana’s eyes. It took only a second, and at the same time it took an eon.

For the tiniest fraction of a moment, Breckin didn’t understand why Riley was doing this. And then it hit him in full force, like a tsunami destroying a dam.

Everything Lana had ever felt for him that she had kept buried deep in her subconscious came to the surface and drowned him. A million aching emotions burst in him at once, things he had never felt on her end before – desperation, need, disappointment, adoration, devotion, and the most painful of all was a dull endless longing. He wanted to ask the question “Why?” but he got his answer as the memories began.

From the very beginning, from the very first time they had ever met, every moment he hadn’t been looking at her, she had been looking at him. Even
